The Zone 9 Side performed creditably at last week’s Veterans Interzone held at Merrylands BC but were unable to progress beyond their highly competitive section.
The Veterans Interzone is restricted to bowlers aged 70 and over and featured eight of the state’s 16 Zones competing in a round-robin format, playing matches of 18 ends with no dead ends but the jack re-spotted on the 2m mark. This particular version at Merrylands saw play on both a grass green and a carpet green.
After opening with a hard-fought 55-53 victory over our northern neighbours, Zone 15 (Central Coast), our Zone 9 “boys” found the going much tougher against Zone 2 (Newcastle), going down 34-61, then trailing Zone 13 (Sydney South) by 34-48 when the match was abandoned due to rain at the 45 end mark.
It was perhaps no coincidence that our lone victory was on the grass green while the pace and vagaries of the carpet proved a tougher challenge in the subsequent two matches.
Congratulations to Merrylands BC on a well-staged event where the home side, Zone 10, claimed the title for the second year running.
